4 Common Myths About Dentures – Busted!
April 8, 2022
Even when recommended, you may feel unsure about dentures as a potential option. Many stereotypes surround them, which can make a person wonder if said treatment is a good choice. It’s hard to make an informed decision when you can’t tell fact from fiction.
To settle the above matter, below are four common myths about dentures and why they’re untrue. Read on to get the truth and learn why dentures might be exactly what you need to restore your smile!
Myth #1: Dentures Need No Care
The Myth: Dentures are a mouth full of false teeth, right? Artificial teeth won’t experience decay and enamel loss, which means dentures don’t need daily care.
The Truth: On the contrary, dentures are slightly more challenging to care for than regular teeth. Because they still sit in your mouth, dentures make regular contact with the bacteria near your gums and tongue. You’ll need to continue cleaning your gums, tongue, and dentures to avoid gum disease and bad breath.
Myth #2: Dentures = No More Dentist Appointments
The Myth: Dentures don’t suffer from things like staining or infections, so their wearers can just forego dentist appointments. There’ll no longer be a need for professional dental treatments at that point.
The Truth: You should still visit your dentist to ensure your dentures fit correctly and that your gums are healthy. It’s even more essential to visit if you also have dental implants, as poor oral health can result in implant failure.
Myth #3: All Dentures Are Unreliable
The Myth: Dentures are made of faulty materials and thus ineffective as a form of tooth replacement. As such, they all fit poorly and leave you unable to properly eat, speak, etc.
The Truth: Not all dentures are alike, some being more reliable than others. Low-cost dentures, for instance, can have a poor fit that impedes their function. Dentures with better materials, though, optimize their fit, function, and appearance to your mouth, allowing them to be both comfortable and reliable.
Myth #4: Dentures Make You Look Old & Unattractive
The Myth: When you think of dentures, the stereotype that comes to mind is old and disheveled retirees with sagging faces. Even if you’re in decent shape for your age, wearing them will only make you look older than you actually are!
The Truth: Earlier, cheaper denture models might’ve made wearers seem old, but the same isn’t true of today’s better models. Some, for instance, support your facial tissue for a younger and fuller-looking face.
Now that you know what’s true and false about them, consider denture treatment as a solid option for the future of your smile!
